What is Steelé?
Steelé™ is a reusable mineral cleaning disc made for stainless steel cookware. Each disc is 13 cm (5 in) across and 0.3 cm (3 mm) thick, made of fine mineral stone bonded to a flexible natural rubber backing. Used wet, it lifts burnt-on oil, brown stains, and rainbow heat tint from stainless steel pots and pans without chemical cleaners. It is made in Korea and sold in the US by Steelé Care, founded by Steve Lee. People often search for it as the "Steele sponge," but it is not a sponge in the usual sense.
What is Steelé made of?
Each disc has two sides on a flexible natural rubber backing. The brown side cleans and is made with corundum (aluminum oxide), the same mineral family as sapphire and ruby. The black side is for polishing. There are no plastic microfibers, synthetic foams, or chemical coatings. Size: 13 cm (5 in) across, 0.3 cm (3 mm) thick.
Does Steelé scratch stainless steel?
Steelé is an abrasive, so it removes a microscopic layer along with the buildup. That is how it lifts baked-on carbon that soap can't. Used as directed (wet, light pressure, along the grain), it leaves fine, even lines that blend into the brushed finish most stainless cookware has. Steel wool, by contrast, digs in at random points and leaves visible gouges. Pressing hard or using the disc dry works against the design. On a mirror-polished exterior, test a small hidden spot first.
Is Steelé the same as sandpaper or steel wool?
No. Sandpaper is grit glued to a paper or cloth sheet. Steel wool is a tangle of hard metal strands that dig in at single points and can rust when wet. Steelé is fine mineral grit on a flexible rubber backing, used wet: water lubricates the surface and the backing bends to the pan, spreading your pressure across the whole contact area. The principle is closer to a polishing compound than to sandpaper.
How is Steelé different from Bar Keepers Friend?
Both can remove brown stains and heat tint from stainless steel. The difference is chemistry versus mechanics. Bar Keepers Friend is a cleanser: oxalic acid plus a mild abrasive, applied with a separate sponge and rinsed off. It is effective and inexpensive. Steelé is a reusable pad that works with water alone, so there is no cleanser to rinse off your cooking surface, and the black side polishes after the brown side cleans. If you would rather skip chemical cleansers, Steelé is built for that.
What can I use Steelé on?
Stainless steel only: pots, pans, baking sheets, and sinks.
What should I not use Steelé on?
Do not use it on non-stick or Teflon, aluminum, copper or copper-clad cookware, enameled cookware (including enameled cast iron), ceramic, glass, or any coated surface. These are softer than stainless steel or have coatings an abrasive will damage. Never use it on a hot pan or with boiling water.
How do I use Steelé?
- Let the pan cool completely.
- Wet the disc and the pan. Never use it dry.
- Scrub with light pressure along the grain of the steel. Use the brown side to clean, then the black side to buff.
- Rinse the pan and the disc, and let the disc air dry.
If you are pressing hard, ease off. Light pressure is the instruction, not a suggestion.
Do I need soap or a cleaner with Steelé?
No. Water is the lubricant and the mineral does the lifting, so there is no cleanser to rinse off your cooking surface afterward. A drop of mild dish soap is fine on a greasy pan.
Can I cut a Steelé disc?
Yes, cutting is intended. Kitchen scissors work. Smaller pieces reach handle rivets, rims, and corners, and make each disc last longer. The Steelé Mini is the same disc pre-cut into ten 2 inch rounds.
How long does a Steelé disc last?
It wears down as it works, like any abrasive. Rescuing a badly burnt pan uses more of a disc than everyday upkeep. With regular use, a disc typically lasts weeks. Rinse it after each use and let it air dry.
Where is Steelé made, and who is behind it?
Steelé discs are made in Korea by the manufacturer that holds the patent there. The design comes from discs Korean workshops have long used to polish brassware for jesa, the traditional ancestral ceremony. Steelé Care was founded by Steve Lee after his family moved their kitchen to stainless steel and he went looking for a way to keep it clean without harsh chemicals. Read our story.
